Redesign of the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ)
shows a renewed and improved publication. November 1,
2005 – After more than 10 years the staff of Canadian Medical
Association Journal has launched a new look for their publication.
Working in coordination with CMAJ staff EarthLore Communications
was retained to overhaul the magazine’s look and feel and
create a publication design that will enhance and invigorate Canada’s
leading and the worlds 5 ranked medical journal for its growing
national and international readership.
The journal staff under the leadership of its editor Dr. John Hoey
wanted to optimize readability, especially for physicians who “typically
don’t have much time at their disposal”; to help readers
navigate through the Journal content, and to assist readers extract
complex and useful information with relative ease.
To meet this significant design challenge Sid Lee, EarthLore’s
Creative Director and Barbara Barkley, Design Manager began by overhauling
the page grid, the type face, chart, tables and graph design, to
produce an aesthetically pleasing publication. Key introduction
pages, such as the table of contents and content specific departments
were rebuilt—in keeping with the need to encourage quick navigation
of content and enhance the visual appeal of the page. The cover
was modified to emphasize the importance of the magazines content
and its unique professional persona and style.
EarthLore staff will be working with CMAJ production staff over
the next several months building on this successful design launch.
